There’s something I want to tell you all, after hearing SO many stories from my coaching clients:
👉TIGHT MUSCLES ARE NEVER THE ROOT CAUSE OF SI JOINT DYSFUNCTION
This is something my coaching clients have been told over and have again. You’ve had physical therapists, yoga instructors, you name it, all try to blame your SIJD on muscle tightness.
From my experience – and from working with all of my clients – I can tell you I’ve never seen this be the root cause.

Blaming SIJD on muscle tightness might seem logical, if this is all your training as a health professional has ever covered.
But there is so much more going on, that many people aren’t aware of.
👉SI joint dysfunction happens when the two bones that make up the joint – the ilium and the sacrum- are no longer in the correct position, relative to each other.
When this happens, it means that the ligaments that are meant to hold the joint together are no longer able to do their job.

Usually, there’s a precipitating factor. Sometimes people can pinpoint the exact moment when it started – an injury, pregnancy- I’ve even had clients who were injured by chiropractic visits or by doing yoga 😦
Other times, the answer may not be quiet as obvious, but when we work together, we can pinpoint some potential causes. For example, sometimes SIJD will be triggered by a different musculoskeletal injury that causes you to move differently. Genetic factors such as hypermobility can also play a role.

At the end of the day, telling someone their SI joint is out of alignment just because they have a tight muscle doesn’t really make sense.
👉Why is that joint out of place?
👉How did that ligament get sprained?
To date, I’ve never seen a client who truly had SI joint misalignment improve with stretching alone.
👉So what next?
If you have SIJD, there’s so much you can do! Things can get a lot better. 🙌🙌🙌
But it starts with addressing the ligament sprain and misalignment as the root cause, and building a stable foundation from there 💪
